Usage of Material spinning

Spinning textile in yarn is done from huge range of material that includes natural fibres like plant, animal, synthetic fibres and mineral fibres. Plant was the first of the fibres for its development, however, animal followed sooner.

Twist and Ply

Twist is the direction in which the spinning of yarn takes place. Yarns are regarded as Z-twist and S-twist as per the spinning direction. TPI measures the tightness of the twist.

Two or even more spun yarns can be piled or twisted together in order to develop a thicker form of yarn. Usually, spinning of handspun single plies takes place with Z-twist and then plying is performed with S-twist.

Plying methods

Yarns can be developed of minimum two and maximum of any number of piles or can be used simply as singles even without plying. Yarn of 2 ply can be easily piled from both the ends of a single long lengthen strand with singles utilizing Andean plying, within which single is firstly wounded around the one hand in the required manner allowing unwinding at both ends at another instance without the tangling part.

One more method used for developing 3-ply yarn is known as Navajo. In this, one of the strands of the singles is properly looped all around itself in the correct manner which is similar to the crochet and three parallel strands that are resulted as twisted together.

Now, the idea behind the use of this method is for keeping all the colors together over the singles dyed in the very sequential order of colors. Form of four-ply yarns is called cabled yarns, developed the plying of two strands of that of two-ply yarn again together in the opposite direction of the plying direction of 2-ply yarns.

This can be regarded as a tradition method of spinning.

Spinning textile and its methods

Spinning textile is an ancient art within which animal, plant and synthetic fibers are well twisted altogether for facilitating the development of yarn. Since thousands of years, only simplest tools were only being used for spinning of fiber that is distaff and spindle.

It was only in high middles ages that spinning wheel came raised the result of individual/single spinners and bulk production only increased during 18th century after the starting of industrial revolution. Hand-spinning has always remained as the most popular handicraft.

Two types of spinning textile methods are:

Hand spinning: The period of beginning of spinning fiber for making string and yarn are lost in ages, still the archaeological evidences that are representing string skirts can be regarded to upper Paleolithic era which was somewhere around 20,000years ago from now.

In the most basic spinning style, the animal hear tufts or plant fiber are prone to rolling down over to the thigh with hand and all the additional tufts are then included as required till the expected length of spun fiber is not attained. After that, the fibre is tied with a stone which is then twirled in round till yarn is not twisted sufficiently, whereupon it is wounded over the stone and same process is repeated one after the other.

Industrial spinning: This is modernized method of spinning, which was actually done with water or by power of steam but it is now being done by electricity and is much faster than the old method, hand spinning.

A multi-spool wheel of spinning, spinning jenny was developed by James Hargreaves, circa 1764, reducing much amount of work required for the production of yarn with that with single worker who’s able to handle more than eight spools at one time.

On a rough note, along with a craftsmen team, Richard Arkwright developed frame of spinning that is the spinning frame, which resulted in the production of strong thread in comparison to spinning jenny. It was quite huge to be operated single handedly, so spinning frame by waterwheel then became water frame.
